BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

An ordinary meeting of the Canterbury College Board of- Governors was held yesterday afternoon; present—Mr H. R. Webb (chairman) and Messrs E. W. Fereday, G. G. Stead, W. Chrystall, J. L. Scott, F. D. S. Neave, J. Anderson, jun.,andT. S. Weston, the , Hons W. Montgomery and E. C. J. Stevens, the Eight Eev Dr Julius, Canon Harper-, Eev J. Gordon Webster and Captain Garsia. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. Westenra. The report of the Museum Committee recommended that three months’ notice should be given to thenightwatchman terminating his appointment, that the insurance on the museum buildings should be reduced by .£12,000, and that the contribution to the registrar’s office should be reduced to .£3O. It also recommended that the fees charged to students attending lectures in the School of Engineering should be altered as follows :—Freehand mechanical drawing from 10s 6d to 12s 6d, elementary descriptive geometry from 10s 6d to 12s 6d, descriptive geometry and the setting out of work from 10s 6d to 12s 6d, descriptive geometry advanced from £1 11s 6d to .£2 2s, mechanical drawing from ill Is to £1 ss, mechanical drawing advanced from <£l 11s 6d to £2 2s. The system of remitting 2s 6d on each lecture fee after the first, was recommended to be done away with altogether for the future. The report was adopted. The report of the School of Art Committee recommended: months’ notice to terminate his agreement be given to the art master, and that a fresh appointment be offered him at a salary at the rate of .£3OO per annum, to commence on the termination of such notice. (2) That the following salaries be paid—Mr Elliott =£3oo per annum, Mr Walsh ,£175, Mr Kidson .£125, Miss Munnings £6O, Mr Seager £l5O (School of Design), caretaker &c.,£60. (3) That the following fees be charged; Morning students, £2 10s instead of £2 2s per term, and £6 instead of £5 5s per annum 5 evening students, one night per week, 10s per term; two nights per week, 15s per term ; three nights per week, 20s per term instead of 15s per term (three nights); and £2 10s instead of £2 per annum (three nights); the same to come into force-so soon as circumstances permit. (4) That the requisite notices be given to the teachers whose salaries it is proposed to reduce, offering them at the same time positions with the lower salary suggested; also to the caretaker.’ (5) The committee reported that it could see no way of making any further reductions in the expenditure, except by closing the department of the School of Painting. The report was adopted. The following were appointed members of High School Boards: —Mr E. E. Good,

Eangiora; Mr E. E. Studholme, Waimate; and Mr G. J. Black, Akaroa. The Chairman reported that Mr Wells had been appointed to take the lectures on music at the College during the absence of Mr Tendall; and that Miss No rah Gard’ner had been appointed teacher of class singing at the Girls’ High School. Mr Pereda.y gave notice to move—" That before carrying into effect the proposed reductions of salaries of masters and employes, the Board take into consideration the advisableness or otherwise of making the Public Library a department purely and solely of the Canterbury College.” The Board then rose.
