CYCLING

[Per Press Association.] NEWCASTLE, March 29. At the cycling sports, the Five-mile International Scratch Race was won by Megson, O’Brien second. The competitors were all local men. All fell except O’Brien, who slowed down until Megson remounted, and the latter won easily in 13min 51fsec. MELBOURNE, March 29.

There was a very large attendance at the St Kilda ground, yesterday, to witness one, five and ten-mile: matches between Martin and Parsons. The American won the mile by six inches in 2min 27sec, after a great set-to. The five-mile event was declared a dead heat, but Martin is dissatisfied with tho decision, and claims to have won by half a wheel. The general opinion, in which Parsons is stated to concur, was that the American had a slight advantage at the finish. The time, lOmin 49|sec, beats the Australian record by nearly one minute. The ten-mile event was ridden in the rain. Parsons led for five miles, when Martin went to the front, and though the Victorian doggedly hung on to his wheel, the American won rather easily by a length. Time—22min 42450 c. Martin’s pacing in all tho events was superior to that of Parsons.
