THE BRUNNERTON DISASTER.

, TO THE EDITOR. : Sib, —Grieved as we all axe at hearing of the sad calamity at Bruuuertou, on Map-ch 26, and the number of entombed miners, and consequently the ■widows and orphans left by this sad‘fatality, I would suggest the desirability of utilising the balance of theiKaitangata Belief Fund, amounting to several thousand pounds, now in the hands tof trustees in Otago. Hoping a way may beriound to utilise this large sum of money subscribed for a similar purpose, to which Hie- public so generously contributed many (years ago.—l am, &c., H. ATKINSON.

{ TO THE EDITOR. I Siig—When such, a terrible disaster as that'which has occurred at the Brunner rmfno overtakes any section of the • compeundty, it is the duty of all to do what they can to assist those bereft. Might I [therefore suggest that our Christchurch (athletes, cyclists, footballers, cricketers, &c., combine to hold a monster / ete at Lancaster Park? As the proprietor of a paper specially devoted toeycling, I wonld be willing, in connqctiouvdth the Times and Press, to undertake all the printing in connection with luch a meeting, the proceeds to be devoted to prizes for,-say, the “Newspaper Cycling .Handicap.” I feel confident that a gathering snob as that suggested would result in a great success, and the fund for the sufJJarers by this sad catastrophe would be augmented. I shall he willing jjto form one of a committee to carry out my (suggestion.—l am, &c., ■ ALEX. WILDEY.
