A STATE BANK.

, TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The junior member for Christchurch is proving himself to be wide awake to the country’s good. The suggestion he has made about a State bank will meet with the approval of thousands of electors. Many of the white elephants belonging to the Bank of New Zealand Estates Company could be turned into a source of profit by judicious management. All the landed estates could be used for finding homes for the, at present, unemployed, and many buildings could be utilised for the purpose of starting colonial industries. Of course we know that more money has been advanced on the properties than they were worth, but that Is no reason they should for over lie dormant. I take it, that the colony is already pledged to the losses which have been sustained by the Bank of New Zealand through reckless mismanagement whilst under private control, and it is now incumbent upon ns to make the bast of our position.—l am, &c,.

IN FAVOUR OP A REAL STATE BANK,
