OBITUARY.

THE HON ERNEST GRAY. Another very old colonist passed away yesterday in the person of the Hon Ernest Gray. Deceased was- in town on Saturday apparently in his usual health, but, on rising yesterday ipornihg,' complained of feelfng unwell. Soon after breakfast he wag taken woispi and medipal aid was immediately summoned, when it was found that be had hurst a blood-vessel on the brain. The usual remedies were applied, and in the afternoon he appeared to be much better. About eight o'clock, howunfavourable symptoms supervened, and half an hour later Mr Gray succumbed from failure of the heart's action., The Hop E. Gray, who was sixty-three years of age, came fo the colony in the early days, and took up the Coldstream Run, on. the Rangitata. While there he married a daughter of Colonel Macpberaon, -of ;New South Wales.' Upon disposing o! that property some years ago he .purchased the Hoon Hay Estate, where he has resided ever since. He hold a seat jn the Legislative Council from 1867 until 1883. In the latter year ho virtually retired from politics, and from that time has devoted bimoelf to' agricultural pursuits- He has bean generally known as one pf the most successful breeders of Jong-wool sbeep in Canterbury, and was always considered ah expert in'all matters Connected' with stock. : Brer since his arrival in Christchurch he has ’taken a deep Interest in the affairs of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral' Association, and was a leading member of the committee of that body, on many occasions filling the office of judge in the sheep glasses at the Metropolitan Shows, as well a? at other fixtures.-' He leaves a wife and four daughters and two .sons to mourn their lops* Two of his daughters are married, one to Mr A. Barker and the other to Mr 6. H. N. Helraore, while the remaining daughters and the sons are living at home. His funeral will take place at the Halswell Cemetery on Wednesday- ‘
