CHRISTCHURCH FIRE BRIGADE.

TO THE BDITOB. Sib,—l hops the correspondence on fire brigade matters in your columns is not about to deteriorate. Hitherto, personalities have been left out, but the last two letters seem to have that flavour. There cannot be any doubt about Mr Harris being at least as good an authority on fire brigade questions as anyone here, and certainly be has had unequalled opportunities for observation. Why he was not consulted on the question of appointing a new superintendent is, to say the least, very unsatisfactory. I understand the new man has held a prominent position in the brigade for a number of years, and can scarcely be considered blameless for its present unsatisfactory condition, and I cannot help thinking the outlook would have been better for all concerned had & stranger been put in charge. At the same time, paying the men a small sum ought to very much simplify the whole matter, and make the retention of good men easier. Let us hope for the best.—l am, &e., EICHMOND.
