PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
The photographic section of tho Philosophical Institute held its first ordinary monthly meeting for the year at Canterbury College last evening. There wao an excellent attendance, and a good and varied programme was provided. The usual competitions brought forward seventeen exhibits, of which the statuary subjects claimed the lion’s share. Of these Mr J. N. Taylor was placed first with a good photograph of the well-known Laocoon group from the museum. Mr W. Clark took second honours, and Messrs Clark aud Jacobson were equal third. In tho genre subject " Playtime,” " a very carefully-thought-out picture,” to use tha words of tha judge, Mr Preece, taken by Mr Jacobson, headed tha list, and waa followed by two snapshot views of school grounds by Mr E. Beardsley. The third subject, in some respects a very difficult one, “A Workshop Interior,” waa fairly well represented, Mr F. 0. East coming first with a very soft picture, Mr J. N. Taylor second, and Mr F. 0. East third. The selection of new lantern slides brought forward contained some very interesting pictures—notably one of a Stewart Island kiwi, a rare species, photogranhad by Mr J. Donald whilst free in its native bush. A number of elides from snapshots of marine subjects, by Mr Sinclair, coloured slides by Mr Gottfried, and others by Messrs Wilkinson, Largo .and Burks were also exhibited. During the evening Mr J. Spillar gave an interesting demonstration of lantern-slide making by reduction from whole plates, the slide u being exposed, developed and shown upon the screen. Arrangements have been completed for the series of winter exhibitions held by the various photographic societies of tho colony, and the Hokitika exhibition will open in about a month. Some forty-six entries were obtained in the room. The use of the new incandescent gas burpers in photography and lantern work, and yellow screens for the better rendering of yellow and red colours, were discussed and the latter illustrated by sample prints.
