CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Mat 13. (Before Mr J, Gapes, J.P., Mr E. C. SJcog, J.P., and Mr J. C. Sopp, J.P.) Drunkenness. —Four first offenders were each fined 5s and costs, in default the usual alternative of imprisonment.—Wm, Kirk was charged with drunkenness, and also with having damaged Constable Andrew’s waterproof to the extent of 30s, He was fined 5a for drunkenness, and 5s for the damage, which he was also ordered to make good, in default of payment fourteen days’ imprisonment. A Series op Charges. —William Creaewell, alias Gleeson, was charged with drunkenness, with having damaged Constable Sinclair’s jumper to the extent of £2 10s, with having assaulted Constable Rowell while in the execution of his duty, and with having assaulted William Kirk in the Christchurch lock-up. Mr Weston appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty to all the charges, except that of drunkenness. The evidence showed that the accused, after having bean searched on Saturday night in the lock-up, made an attempt to get back his money, which was lying on the desk. Constable Rowell interposed to prevent him, and received two severe kicks. Constable Rowell was assisted by Constable Sinclair, who in the struggle that ensued had his jumper torn. The accused was then put in tho same cell with Kirk, but the latter, when called, said he did not wish to press the charge of assault. The accused was fined 10s and costa for drunkenness, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment; fined 5s for damaging Constable Sinclair’s uniform, and also ordered to pay for the damage, in default of payment fourteen days' imprisonment, and sentenced to two months* imprisonment with hard labour for the on Constable Rowell. Mr Weston said if he was not out of order, he would appeal to the Bench to reconsider its decision with regard to the assault. Their Worships said that they considered it a serious assault. (Before Mr J. Gapes, J.P., and Mr Tombs, J.P.) Alleged Assault and Robbery.— Hetty M’Gregor (who was not well enough to appear), James Miller and Robert Johnston (on remand) were charged with having assaulted John Davis and robbed him. Mr Donnelly appeared for the accused. Inspector Broham stated that he had received from the gaol-surgeon a certificate that the female accnsed was unable to appear. He was, therefore, obliged to apply for a remand. The accused were remanded for a week. ASHBURTON. Monday, May 13. (Before Mr T. E. Upton, J.P.) Drunkenness.— George Thompson was fined 5s and 4s expenses, in default seven days’ imprisonment. Joseph Sloaae was fined £2, in default seven days* imprisonment.
