PLEURO-PNEUMONIA.

THE PERTHSHIRE'S' CATTLE; Tho following hitter' has 1 bean seat by the President of the Canterbury Agricultural snd. Pastoral Association to the Agricultural Department:— ’“May 10, 16S3S. —J. D.'Bitchie, Esq., Secretary of Agriculture, Wellington. —Sir, —l am directed by the committee of this Association to communicate with you regarding the shipment of Australian cat;ls, per Perthshire, now 'in Port Lyttelton. As you doubtless know, it ia reported that some of them are suffering from pleura-pneu-monia. This may ba bo or not ; at any rata I trust ail doubts will be shortly aofc ut rest by n post-mortem examination. But in any case, there is no doubt that reports to thia effect will reach the Old Country, and it appears to mo quite likely that, owing to the vessel having baeu in a New Zealand harbour, there may bo some centurion in the minds of people at Home as to the source whence those cattle came; thin would likely prejudice any shipment:; of cattle from this colony. I would therefore ask you to communicate with tb. Agent-General before this- shipment- cap. reach England, and impress upon him the fact that not only aro there no cattle on board from New Zealand, but that further, during the vesael’a st*y bore oho was put in and that not oaa carcase, dead or alive, was allowed to bo lauded on these shores, and also that you will request him to take all necessary measures_ to ventilate these facts amongst that sectionof tho British public which in at all interested ia, or affected by, tho meat trade between Britain and the colonies. _ Trusting that y&u will concur in tho advisability of those suggestions,-—I have, &c,, E. 6. Statelet, President. —P.S.—Since writing above, it has transpired that tha Government veterinary Burgeon lino declared the disease to be pleuro, which, as no doubt you will agree, renders the course I suggest urgently necessary.—E.G.S.” The following telegram has bean received from the Premier, in reply to one despatched on Thursday afternoon: —“ B. G. Stnveley, Esq,, President Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Christchurch.Be cattle on Perthshire. A bullock has bean slaughtered and post-mortem held. No doubt whatever the unrmaljwas Buffering from plcuro-pnenmoaia. Hava wired Premier of Queensland of this fact, snd also Apeat-General.—-E. J. Seddon, Wellington.” TPer Press Association.! WELLINGTON, May 10. Tho Health Department does not consider any further action relative to the Perthshire’s cattle necessary, as there was no communication with the shore. All tho cattle were Australian, and tha Government will now have to consider the expediency of prohibiting the importation of Aucitraliwa cattle. Tho Government has cabled to the Agent-General to take precautions to make it clear that the Perthshire’s shipment of cattle has nothing to do with New Zealand, Communications are also passing with the Queensland Government.
