SOUTH CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD .

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Education Board was held on Thursday ; present—Revs G. Barclay and J. White, Messrs Howell, Fulton and Graham. The following motion was carried unanimously :—“ That the Education Board y offaSouth Canterbury sincerely regrets theraoent demise of Mr S. W. Goldsmith, one of its members from its first foundation, and its chairman for the last ten years; that it bears cordial testimony to Mr Goldsmith’s amiability, impartiality and ability in both aspects; and that it respectfully tenders to his widow assurances of deepest sympathy in view of her loss.” The resignations wore reported of Mr Smyth, head-master at Wcimate, and Mr B. E. Low, second-master at Temuka. In view of the small meeting, Mr Barclay’s motion that tho Board should accept the duty of examining Roman Catholic schools was postponed for a month. The newlyappointed truant officer reported that he had served notices on or cautioned twenty-one parents, with satisfactory results, except in threo cases, and in these he would lay informations. Satisfaction was expressed with the report. Tenders for works were accepted as follow: Shifting schoolroom at Orari Gorge, Mr M’Cliutook, £34 j erecting schoolroom, &0., Pareora Village Settlement, Mr Berry, £145; fencing at Winchester, Mr Richardson, £9 IGs; painting and papering at Milford, Mr Cooper, £G 15s; erecting residence at Rangitata Station, Mr J. H. Dean, £149 10s. In connection with the school at Pareora Village Settlement, it was decided to increase tbo site to four acres, Mr Brydone offering to sell two acres more at £5 per acre. A deputation from the Waimataitai committee waited on the Board to urge tho enlargement of the school. It was resolved that the Building Committee, together with the architect, should visit the school and report upon its condition and. requirements.- The Inspector's report on tho examinations of the secondary subject pupils in the High Schools of Waimata and Temuka, was considered satisfactory so far as the results of the teaching went, but the number of pupils was disappoint-ing—twenty-six at ?i/aimata and live at Temuka.
