DUNEDIN, March 3, The members' of the Tariff Commission to-day inspected two inventions by Mr Wallers, One is a machine for extracting oil and grease from cotton wasteland yolk from wool, which produces lanolins worth about 4a per lb. About half a pint of the substance can be: obtained from an ordinary fleece of wool in grease, Hahasalso inyeuted; a process for the extraction of acia from timber, some samples of which were shown. This process has the effect of seasoning timber in an effective way, and in a very short spaco of time. Evidence was given by Customs clerks and various firms, pointing out anomalies in tho tariff, and making suggestions - by' which they could be avoided. Mr John Christie, plumber/ asked for the removal of the duty on plumbers’ sanitary work which could not be manufactured in, the colony, as the charges were' prohibitive. lie also asked for the removal of the duty oh lead pipes. Mr Thomas Stevenson, electrical engineer, urged that a duty should be put on high-class engines, so as to enable local machinists to compete. The Commission adjourned till Monday.
