SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

ST ALBANS. The monthly meeting of the St Albans School Committee was held on Wednesday night ; present Messrs Palmer (chairman), Norris, M’Cleave, Simpson, Swindell, Morgan, Brooker, A*Court and Wake. The deputation appointed to wait cn the Board of Education with regard to the withdrawal of a pupil teacher from the aide school reported that the proposal to reduce the staff of that school came from the master of the main echool, and the Board’s Secretary could hold out no hope of getting another pupil teacher appointed. After some discussion, Mr Speight was requested to explain the circumstances to the committee, and stated that he considered the side school overstaffed ; and as the custom was to compare the results of that school with that of his own, he recommended to the Board that a pupil teacher should be removed. Mr Speight then withdrew, and ultimately the following resolution was adopted : “ This committee expresses its regret that tfe headmaster should have suggested to *tSe*Soird that a pupil teacher should be removotvfrom the side school, and decides that in f uture all such proposed alterations be submitted to the committee before going before the Board.” The report of attendance at both schools was very satisfactory. Consent was given to the teachers to take the children for an excursion. The sum of £2 2s was voted for prizes for swimming at the forthcoming school sports. The committee also privately offered a Maltese erosa for the best boy swimmer, and a biooch for the beat girl swimmer. Messrs Palmer and Wake ware appointed a sub-committee to assist the teachers in carrying out a programme. The names of several truants were brought before the committee, and it was decided that » final notica should be sent, and that, failing compliance within a week, summonses should be taken out, Messrs Simpson, Swindell and Wake were re-appointed a Works Committee, and the meeting terminated.

SOUTHBBIDQB. . The usual monthly meeting of ~the Southhridga School Committee was hold on Monday evening; present—Kev E. Whitehouse (Chairman), Messrs P. Paddy, E. P. Kill, J. Seott, Gr. Marquaud ami W. Wilson. The Chairman reported that the number on the roll was 268 and the average attendance 213. Correspondence was read from the Education Board confirming Miss Alexander's appointment as infant mistress, end appointing T. A. Gates as pupil teacher, After some discussion ns to admitting the school children to the swimming bath, a few small accounts were passed for payment and the meeting closed.
