The Chancellor has issued an Order -in - Council protecting New Zealand estates from the death duty. The Colonial Office authorities state that similar orders will be issued in respect to other colonies when the Australian Governments apply and make the necessary legislative alteration. In the Liberator Building Society cases counsel stated that the House and Land Investment Company bad in 1892 published a balance-sheet which showed assets .£2,400,000, whereas there were really half a million, and the debts exceeded the assets bv .£1.600,000. In the Chamber of Deputies a mild sensation was caused by M. Jules Roche urging the Government not to stop the financial sacrifice, and pointing out that since 1887 the German military expanse exceeded the French by eight millions, and had secured permanent and effective conditions.
