At the Taursnga licensing meeting, an application for the removal of the Yorkshire Gray Hotel license to Rotorua was granted, but the Bench, intimated that if a house according to plan was nofc_ erected and finished before the next licenaing meeting in June, the renewal of the license would be refused. Complaints ' have been made to the police of pocket-picking on the wharves iu the crowd when steamers depart. Throe ladies have been robbed ox various sums. Mr Hyatt, hairdresser of Oaohunga, has bean prosecuted for having hia shop open while he was not exempt, not being of European or New Zealand" extraction. _He has laid his case before the American Consul. Ho is an American citizen, and claims that . the Government of New Zealand cannot take away hia right _to have his shop open and make an exception of him because ha is not of New Zealand or European extraction. Mr Connolly has promised to bring the matter under the notice of the Government of the United States. Mr Hyatt’s case was dismissed on a technicality. The Davenport Borough Council offices were broken into, and tha burglar chalked on the safe the pathetic sentence “No time.” Sixteen entries were received to-night for the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting. Soma of the representatives leave to-morrow for Wellington, and the rest on Monday. Admiral Bridge gave an “ at home ” today on thaOrlando. Lord and Lady Glasgow and the Mayor and .Mayoress were among the-guests! The Mayor entertained Lord Glasgow; the Admiral, officers of the fleet and some citizens at a dinner to-night, at the Auckland Club. The only, toasts were:—“Tha. Queen.” “The Governor” and “ The ■ Admiral,” The speeches were of a cordial and complimoutry character.
