[Pee Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 6. Further reports from Mr Frey berg again urge timber owners to take advantage of the opening now afforded for New Zealand woods, and recommend the acquisition of a wharf in London to avoid the necessity of forced sales. He suggests that English oak, plane, ask, beaches and limes should be planted south of Lyttelton, but not larches; that barberry bushes should be avoided, as they induce rust iu wheat. North of Lyttelton Italian walnut and cork oak could be grown to great advantage. The Hauroto, which arrived from Sydney this morning, brought seventy passengers from all ports, among the number being H.S.H. Prince Francis Joseph of Battenburg and suite and Mr Thomas Salt, chairman of the Midland Railway Combany. Prince Francis Joseph of Battenburg stays hero three days, than goes on to Auckland, and joins tha San Francisco mail boat on March 23. Ha ia accompanied by Colonel Townsend, of the 2nd Life Guards. Amateur athletic championships were decided this evening as follows :—, 120yds Hurdles—R. Gore 1, C. Gore 2, G. Johnston 3, Time—l7£sec. Milo Fiat— P. Clark 1, H. Anderson 3, F. Angell 3. At n meeting of the Benevolent Institute, it was stated that the sum obtained for the year just ended was £SBOO, and it would now be necessary to- ask for £6OOO, in view of a severe winter. Some members thought that even tha latter sum would not bo sufficient without the assistance of the Government, and it was ultimately decided to ask the United District Board for £6500.
