BOROUGH COUNCILS.

LINWOOD. An ordinary meeting of the Linwood Borough Council wan held last evening; present the Mayor and Councillors Pentecost, Joseph Taylor, Marshall, Atkinson, Duncan, Pearce and John Taylor, Leave of absence was granted to Councillors Horsley and Board, The Mayor reported the action the Drainage Board had taken in reference to the Tuam Street drain. Councillor Pentecost moved—“ That the Mayor be instructed to call a public meeting of ratepayers to consider the matter.” Councillor John Taylor seconded the motion. Councillor Marshall moved an amendment—“ That a further legal opinion be obtained before taking any action.” The amendment was seconded by Councillor Atkinson and carried by five votes to two. The question of erecting three lamps at North Opawa was left in the hands of the Lighting Committee, with power to act. Correspondence of a routine character waa dealt with. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since last meeting had amounted to £340 17s lid. The cash in hand was .£25 4s 9d, and tho debit balance at the bank £64 4a 9d. Tho committee was of opinion that tho rate of commission charged for collecting tho Drainage Board’s rates should be the same as that in Sydenham, viz., 3£ per cent. Accounts amounting to £358 8a lid were recommended to be passed for payment. The report was adopted. After dealing with routine business the meeting closed. WOOLSTON. The monthly meeting of the Woolston Borough Council was held on Thursday ! evening ; present—The Mayor and Coun- | cillora Anderson, Wood, Milne, Hopkins, | Gimblott, Rennie and Douglass. Mr { Armitage reported as to the qualities and cost of a certain street light; tho coat of each light would be, supposing the lamp to be lighted from sundown to 11 p.m., lid per week each lamp, or 45s per annum. It was resolved to order three new lamps, and continue with the one at the Tannery. Letters were received from Inspector Broham and Constable Johnstone with regard to the latter’a removal from Woolston. A letter was received from the Lyttelton Harbour Board, stating that lifebuoys would be placed at the bathing shed near tho racecourse, but with regard to the washing away of the banks of, the river tho Board had no recommendation to make. Councillor Douglass moved, and Councillor Wood seconded—“ That with the view of getting representation on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the matter be placed in tho hands of the member for the district, and that Sumner be asked to cooperate.” The motion was carried. The matter of repairs to the Eadloy Bridge waa left in tho hands of the Works Committee. After conducting other business, the meeting terminated.
