THE LIVE CATTLE TRADE. [Special to Press Association]. LONDON, March 1. Mr Valentine, referring to the report that Sir Saul Samuel is urging New South Wales to export poultry, states that it is imperative that the best quality be sent, that tbe birds be large, young and wellpacked; that the best prices are secured in March and April, and he estimates that 2s 6d each would ba obtained for good poultry, and Is additional for the choicest Dorkings, Plymouth Rocks and Brahmas. He advocates united colonial exhibits at the' various agricultural shows in the United Kingdom, beginning in June. The Argentine Republic has sent a shipment of butter’ as a teat of competition with the Australian article. The Kaikoura’s frozen meat is in excellent condition. The report that a portion of it was damaged was made under a misapprehension. March 3. Mr W. Malthouse, meat salesman, kad six others of the largest and soundest salesmen in Smithfield have offered to combine with Australian growers to abolish middlemen in the initiation of a live cattle trade, and express willingness to act as consignees or to buy direct from producers. They appear convinced that there is a great permanent future for such a trade. Mr Elliott, a Liverpool importer, considers that a mote extended trial is required, though he is sure that the trade will ultimately bo established. He doubts the wisdom of competing against North and South America, as buyers prefer the nearest market, as tbe supply is easier regulated. Throe or four-year-old castle should be seat in pens three feet wide, and it is not desirable, he thinks, to send the heaviest stock. The New Zealand Lean and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, has received the following cable message dated LONDON, March 1. Tallow.—There is little demand, and the market is easier.
