RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— l thought ere this that the management would have given ua lower fares generally. The so-called cheap fares cannot fairly be considered excursion rates. For instance, the return secondclass fare, 5s 6d, for the pleasure of travelling, from here to Christchurch is far too high. And why are there so many restrictions and conditibns of travel imposed ? I hold that having bought and paid for a ticket, the purchaser should be allowed to use* it—the same as a loaf of bread—when he or she thinks fit, excepting, may he, special excursions. In those the time generally allowed is too short. The management in the past has been anything but popular, and I hope to see the present head of affairs do something soon to get rid of that painful sight—empty cars. By yesterday’s train at 5s 6d, about a dozen travelled from here; to-day’s train at 3a was packed, —I am, &e., DEMOCRAT. Ashburton, March 1. ,
