SWIMMING.

EAST CHRISTCHURCH AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB. This club’s fifth, annual race meeting, held at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon, proved on unqualified success. The additional attraction of the 220yds Championship of New Zealand drew a very large number of spectators, and as the events were got off witli commenuaole promptitude and a varied programme was provided, the affcernoon ? a sport was moat enjoyable. The presence of Australian representatives in the championship event I aroused the greatest interest among the spectators, and the contest gave a fine exhibition of swimming. Owing to_ the . number of competitors the race had to be swum in heats. Hoey (Auckland), Brouafoot (New South Wales) and Dacre (Wellington) started in the first heat, and though Hoey did not win the final, he must have been gratified by the enthusiastic applause which broke out as he beat the New South Wales representative after a magnificent spurt. Ihe second heat was won easily by L. Leo (New South Wales), whose graceful, easy style was much admired. Bailey, the erstwhile New Zealand champion, attracted much attention in this heat by an exhibition of the Gormley stroke, which is certainly as peculiar as it is fast, the upper leg in the side strode coming out of the water at each stride. L. Leo was at once picked out as the winner, and so it proved, as in the final heat he went away with a spurt at the finish, and ■won easily by four yards, Hoey being second. Davis, Hendry and Dr Kelly, the New South Wales swimming representatives, arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday morning, where they were met by Mr G. J. C. Smart, local Consul of the New Zealand Swimming Association, Mr F. W. Johnston (captainof' the East Christchurch Club) and Mr A. Francis, vice-president, and Mr C. Fox, secretary of the Christchurch Swimming Club. The visitors were driven to the Clarendon Hotel, where, at 12.30, a formal reception took place, the Mayor of Christchurch occupying the chair, and the Auckland representatives, and several members of the Association and the local clubs being present. The Mayor said they had met to receive the swimming representatives of New South Wales, and also those from other parts of New Zealand. In the name of the citizens he welcomed them to Christchurch; Mr E. W. Eoper (president of the East Christchurch Swimming Club) said ha thought that a gathering of this kind should he gratifying to those who took an interest in athletics generally. Ho thought the visitors would find every arrangement

made for. hospitably entertaining them during their stay. The sport here was always carried on with fairness, and good feeling always entered into the rivalry in swimming matters here. Mr W. K, Bassett welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Richmond Club, as did Dr Moorhouse on behalf of the Christchurch Swimming Club, and Mr J. A. Caygill for Sydenham. The toast of “The Visitors” was then proposed by the Mayor, and drunk with musical honours.

Dr Kelly responded on behalf of the Now South Wales representatives. They had, ho said, been' told before they left Sydney that they would have a good reception, and in this they had not been disappointed. They were not really a representative team, shine of their champions being unable to get away, but he hoped they would give a good account of themselves.

Mr Brigham (Auckland) and Mr Hendry (New South Wales) also: replied, the latter saying that ho hoped that his Association would be able to return the compliment in 1896. Mr Moloney (Now, South Wales) and Mr Dacre (Auckland) spoke, and the proceedings were brought to a close by drinking the health of the Christchurch Swimming. Association, and passing a vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding.

Yesterday the visitors were taken to Lyttelton by the 9.30 s.m. train. There the steamer John Anderson awaited them, and the various bays around the harbour, as well as Port Levy, were visited. They then proceeded to Governor's Bay, where they were entertained at dinner at the Ocean View Hotel. The afternoon was spent there, and the party returned to Christchurch at 6 p.m.
