PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday afternoon !in the City Council Chambers; present—j the Mayor of Christchurch (in the chair),' Mesdam.es Julius and Irving, Messrs J. H. i Parker,. T. Hill, M. Murphy (honorary | secretary) and E. Poster (assistant secretary and inspector). Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Kinsey and Mr D. Duncan. ■ The Inspector stated that he had collected some information regarding the dehorning of cattle, and had found that in England, Scotland and Ireland several prosecutions had taken place for cruelty in dehorning cattle, the results having generally been in favour of the practice, and several appeals had been heard. He recommended certain methods of dehorning. Some discussion took place, after which the inspector was inctruoted to make inquiries as to the moat humane method of dehorning, and report at next meeting. In the meantime, letters were ordered to be sent to the kindred societies throughout New Zealand asking for their opinion on the matter. The Inspector’s report dealt with the ; places ho had visited during, the past month. Six. cases of cruelty ,had been reported by honorary inspectors, and three by 'private persons, and he had noticed twelve cases himself. Two men had been fined JES each and costa at Eakaia for beating and overdriving two horses. Messrs Hill and Scott had kindly offered to act as honorary solicitors at Kaiapoi, lin place of Mr Hoban, who had left. Twenty-three cautious had been administered during the month. The report was received. Messrs Hill and Scott’s offer was received with thanks. Mr Parker brought up the question of providing a watering-place for horses near tho Stanmore Bridge, and it was resolved to write to the City and Linwood Borough Councils on the subject. The meeting then terminated.
