WELLINGTON ITEMS.
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 1. The delegates from the Eailway Society had an interview with Mr Eonayne, General Manager. The proceedings were private, but it is understood that the interview;; was satisfactory. The delegates asked for modifications in the system of promotions in the locomotive department. The platelayers’ requests will be laid before the Minister. Between fifty and sixty more applications from Otago and Southland, covering £6OOO, have been approved by the Lending Board. The free passes allowed on port railway lines to captains of intercolonial steamers have been called in by the Eailway Department. [from our own correspondent.] Government, while recognising that the motives of applicants who desired that one lying-in home in the colony should bo exempt from the operation of the Infant Life Protection Act are of the purest character, cannot interfere with the operation of the Act by making any exemption.
