George 4 Pssquan and John Kucan were drowned while bathing near Dargaville. John Watkins had a narrow escape on the Kaihu Railway. Apparently he did not hear the whistle of the train, and was struck by the cowcatcher of the engine and thrown on to a water-table, receiving severe scalp wounds. SHOOTING ACCIDENT. A serious shooting accident happenedat North Loburn, on Wednesday afternoon, to a young woman aged about twenty-eight, daughter of Mr Patrick Ponsonby, farmer. A younger sister, a girl about seventeen years old, had found an old revolver in her brother’s bos, and, not knowing that; it was loaded, placed a lighted match to the nipple. The weapon exploded, and the bullet, passing through an open door into the kitchen, struck her sister on the left arm, near the shoulder, shattering the bone. Dr Clayton was sent for, and finding the injury to be of a serious character, Dr Volckmann was called in, and the sufferer was removed to the Ashley Hotel. On consultation it was decided to amputate the injured limb at the shoulder. The operation was successfully performed. Late last evening the patient was doing as well'as could be expected.
