THE UNEMPLOYED.

TO THE BDITOE. Sib, —It is very unfortunate to sea so many men out of employment at this time of the year. But what are we to do ? There is no private employment to be had at any price. That being so we are bound to throw ourselves on the State. We cannot see our wives and families starve in the land of plenty. It is the same old cry year after year, and no one has had the courage so far to solve it. It will have to be faced sooner or later in all its fury. X must confess that the present Liberal Government, in my opinion, has dose more for the working classes of this colony than any other Government. We working men have a lot to thank them for. It cannot be expected that the Government can find work for every man at one time, and it naturally follows that while men were in good employment at Cheviot for very nearly two years and earning good wages, a large number of men had to walk about all last winter and the greater part of this summer in idleness. I think it only right and just that these men should have the first show at the first opportunity, seeing that they ate all married - men with families. I trust Mr Lomas, the Labour

Agent, will take a note of all men that have been so long employed at the Cheviot, also those men that have been so long idle. My object in writing the greater part of this letter is the following I happened to be in the square this morning while an unemployed meeting was going on, and the greater pare of the men that were harassing the Government for work were men who have only just left the Cheviot. The gteiter part of them have had. good work there and good wages.— I am, &c„ *LIVE AND LET LIVE,
