NEW BRIGHTON AQUATIC SPORTS.

Beautiful ■weather was experienced on Saturday afternoon for the aquatic sports on the Avon at New Brighton. The trams which left Cathedral Square and Edward?, Bennett's corner at intervals during the afternoon were well patronised, and there was a large gathering of residents ou the banks of the river. The sport throughout was interesting, and some of the items were highly amusing. The officials were as follow: Boat races— Judges: Messrs E. 0. Bishop, J. Dilloway, 0. Burgess, and G. JEL M’Haffie. Starters: Messrs W. Mansell and H. Hawker. Swimming races —Judges: Messrs A. Francis, J. M. Watson and F, W. Johnston ; starter, Mr W. B. Eyre; treasurer, Mr E. Sefton; honorary secretary, Mr A, W, Owles; committee, Messrs, E. C. Bishop, G. MTafcyre, G. Slater, E. Wells, H. Hawker, W. Blake, G. Findlay, W. F. Warner, H. Keats, C. Curtis, M. Davy, J. Thompson and A. Eobb. The Stsmmora Band, under Bandmaster M'Eillop, was present, and played a capital programme of music. The following are details of the various events:—

Handicap Swimming Eace, 75ydo, amateur ; first prize trophy value £3 3a, presented by Messrs E. Eeeeo and Sons, second medal presented by Messrs B. Petersen and Co. —First heat: G. J. 0. Won by a few inches, the others close up. Second heat; E. A. East (East Christchurch) 9-Jsec, 1; J. W. Eaves (Christchurch) 2; J. E. Duncan (Christchurch) 7sec, 8. G. Tacon Hsec, E. Marsh Isec, T. Orr 4sec, A. Duncan SJ-sec and E. Maddren llcec also started. Won by a foot or two. Final: E. A. East Siaec, 1; J. W, Eaves slaec, 2; G, J. C. Wmart 6jsec, 3. T. Cotterill 3i?.eo, G. 11. Fox 4Jsec and J. E. Duncan 7sec also started. Won by a few inches.

Handicap Swimming Kaee, 60yds, amateur, boys under sixteen; first prize trophy presented by Messrs Plaisted aud Co., second medal presented by Mr M. Sandstein —A. Kent (Sydenham) Gsec, 1; E. Bell (Sydenham) Si-sec, 2. A. Truscott (East Christchurch) scr also started, but stopped at the wrong flag. ~ Handicap Swimming Eace, 100yds, open; first prize £1 10a, second 10s. First heat: W. E. Symeo scr, 1; C. Page lOaeo, 2. H. Knight Bsec, W. Irvine 9sec and F. Barker lOiec also started. Won very easily by three yards. Second heat: W. Barker Bsec, 1; W. Tipler Saec, 2; H. Henry lOaec, 3. J. Weir ISsoc and J. E, Button 15neo also started. Won easily by two yarns. Final heat; W. E. Sysr.es scr, 1; W. Barker Bsec, 2; C. Page lOaec, 3. Sycsea won very easily in 82-Jsec. Handicap Swimming Eace, 60yds (open), boys under 10; first prize trophy - presented by Messrs G. T. White and Co., second Mr J. Howell’s trophy.—J. Searle 3sec, 1; T. Butterfield scr, 2 S. Double. Senile, three-quarters of n mile; first prize .£1 10s, second 10a.—First heat: A. J. Manning and H. G. Manning beat G. Findlay and W. Evans. Second heat: A. Thomas and F. Thoinaa beat F. Henley and W. Keats. Third heat: A. J. Manning and 11. G. Manning beat A. Boon aud E. Stevens, Final heat: A. Thomas ami F. Thomas beat A. J. Manning and H. G. Manning. Greasy Bowsprit; first prize trophy presented by Mr G. H. M’Haiiie, second prise trophy.—F. .Barker 1, W. Barker 2. Eight competed. This event caused much amusement. The winner was the only competitor who succeeded iu walking to the end of the polo. ’ • Tub Eace, 25yda; first prize trophy presented by the D.1.C., second prize trophy. —E, Stevens 1, A. Boon 2. This event was decided in heats. In the first heat seven competed, but all the competitors, with tho exception of Boon, fell out of their tubs. Stevens won tho second heat easily from four others.

Punt Race, go-as-you-please.—This event differed from the Punt Sculling Race, inasmuch as there were three men in each punt, and no oars were allowed. The race proved very interesting, and was won by the Barker brothers and 11. Henry, with Boon brothers and Stevens second. At a late hour three events had not been finished. •
