SHOP HOURS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— To many like myself, the halfholiday conference was a mere farce. I am surprised that the outside bodies seat delegates at all. Sydenham has only one third less population than Christchurch, yet it has only one vote, while Christchurch has seven. If the city shopkeepers were councillors and delegates and in favour of Thursday closing, the matter would bo virtually Battled, whatever the opinions of outaido local bodies might be. This is very unsatisfactory to the masses. Some of the municipal bodies, together with large numbers of wholesale and large retail ahopa, and thousands of the thinking purchasers, are in favour of Saturday closing. They have simply been outvoted by a few interested small fry shopkeepers, who produce nothing, bub pimply distribute English manufacturers’ goods. I hope that ouch gentlemen will consider that it is the masses that keep the shopkeepers, and not the shopkeepers the masses.—l am) &c, FAIR PLAT.
