Rain fell in the morning, but the weather cleared before the first race and a pleasant day ensued. The course was in good condition despite tbe wet, and the attendance was fair. Salutation made the running for the first mile, and passing the stand was followed by Marvel, Loyalty, The Admiral and Light Artillery, Titan being last. Along tho back stretch Portsea moved up, but at the sheds he was beaten. Entering tho straight Marvel waa in front, with Light Artillery and Loyalty in immediate attendance. Titan, however, came up on the outside, and at the distance challenged the leader, and after a desperate race squeezed past the post by a neck. Loyalty was fourth and Portsea last. Time—Smin 38sac. CITY HANDICAP, of 10 sovs each, with 400 sovs added; second horse 50 sovs from the stake. One mile and a half. Mr W. A. Gardiner’s b c Trenchant, hy Trenton —Bridesmaid, oyrs, 7st 121 b 1 Mr ,T. Tho weather was stormy. The attendance numbered about 1100, and the racing was good. Results:—Trial Stakes, one mile-—York Rose 1, Duchess of Norfolk 2, Home Rule 3. Won by a short neck. Time—lmin 49j3ee. Dividend—£3 10s. Hack Race, one mile—Doubtful 1, Sarsfiald 2. Won easily. Dividend—£l ss. Citizens’ Handicap, one mile and a quarter —Harkawsy 1, King Harry 2, Johnny Faa 3. This was a splendid race, not a length separating the three. Time—2min 20f sec. Dividend —£112 s. Hack Race—Doubtful 1, Miss Ann 2, Won easily. Dividend—£ll6a. First Hurdle Race, one mile and three-quarters—Regalia 1. Raven and Mayboy ran a dead heat for second place. Dividend —£1 10a. Railway Stakes, one mile—King Harry 1, Harkaway 2. Won easily. The annual meeting of members of the Ellesmere Jockey Club was held on Wednesday evening at the Leeston Hotel. The chair wes occupied by Mr W. Bishop (president). Mr W. Moorhead was requested to act as secretary temporarily, and tho President and Secretary were authorised to sign cheques. As there was only a small attendance it was decided to adjourn for one week, and call all the members together by circular, to discuss the question of holding a race meeting this year.
