RAILWAY COMMISSIONERS.
TO THE EDITOE. Sib, —I was pleased to read your correspondent’s (" Disgusted Shareholder’s ”) letter in your issue of this morning, and I thoroughly agree with every word he says. There isn’t the slightest doubt but that the Government has done wrong in retaining the services of Mr M’Kerrow in preference to Mr Hanna,y, a man possessed of a thorough training in the management of railways, besides being a man that is always comeatable by all and sundry. I am safe in saying that had ha been the sole Commissioner we would not have had any cause to grumble about the management. Seeing that the present appointments are for only nine months, the Government can, upon the expiration of that time, appoint the best man they have as Commissioner, and I can safely say that man is Mr Hanuay.—l am, &0,, PAEEHA. TO THE EDITOE. Sie, —The late accident at the Selwyn Street railway crossing compels me to write a few lines to you. Nearly every week there is a narrow escape at 6 p.m, through two trains passing at either the Montreal, Windmill, Selwyn or Park Road crossings. When one train has passed pedestrians and others naturally think all danger is over, and at once attempt to cross. I myself know of at least four narrow escapes during the last sis months. The danger might be avoided through one of the trains leaving a few minutes earlier or later. But what I want to point out moat of all is the fact that no gatekeeper is kept at the Park Road crossing. This crossing is therefore very dangerous, but it is made the more so through stacks of timber which completely block the view to drivers of vehicles and others. I think it bus only to bo mentioned to the authorities and they will see that a gatekeeper is placed there. If they do so they will earn the gratitude of the residents around.—l am, &c,, SAFETY,
