DISTRICT SCHOOLS.

FEND ALTON. The annual festival took place on Friday afternoon. The proceedings commenced with, the prize distribution at half-past two in the large schoolroom, where the scholars and their parents assembled. The Chairman of the School Committee (the Rev J. W. Stack) said the school was in a more prosperous state in every way this year than iu any previous year during its existence. The average attendance for the past quarter was two hundred, and this entitled the school to the services of a third pupil teacher, and also to additional accommodation. The Inspector’s report was characterised by the Secretary of the Board as being " highly satisfactory in all departments.” The gratifying results of the examination speak well for the way in which Misses Lezsrd and Johnston performed their duties during the temporary absence of Mr Bullock. The Hon H. B. Gressou distributed tbe prizes, and tho Chairman, on behalf of the teachers and pupils, presented Miss Hill, who is leaving the school, having completed her course as a pupil-teacher, with a handsome leather dressing - case and purse, as a token of their regard. Mr Bullock returned thanks on-behalf of Miss Hill. The Chairman invited the parents to inspect specimens of different kinds of work done by the children in their spare hours, and the assembly then adjourned to the play-ground, where Messrs Johnstone, Pepper, Williams and Bramford acted as hosts. After tea the children engaged in sports, Messrs Townshend, Beckett and Williams aupsrintending the boyo’ sports, and Mrs Pepper and Misses Tull.iy and Durose the girls’ amusements. Among the exhibits on view were some very good carving by John Guthrie, and a model mill made by Donald Malcolm. An oil painting of considerable merit, presented to the school by Mr Hay, of Riccarton, and a beautifully inlaid table-top, made by Mr Williams, were also on view. Cant 3. Division V., E. Hepburn 1, M. Hay 2 and N. Hewinson 3. GRBENPAEK. The annual distribution of prizes to the children attending this school took place on Friday evening. A concert was given by the children under tho direction of their teichers, Mr Bramley and Miss Denne. The schoolroom was well filled, and the various items were well received. At the conclusion ci the concert Mr Quayle, chairman of the School Committee, moved a hearty vote of thanks to the teachers for giving the conceit and for their labours during the past year. Mr Quayle then presented the prizes, each child passing a standard receiving a prize and all others a present. The following iu the prize-list: —Dux: Isabella Yarr. Standard II.: Charles Carr, George Duff, Donald Davidson, Alice Andrew, Clara Carter, Gertrude Croat, William Kimber, Annie Hunter, Thomas Hubbard and Charlotte Zimmerman. Standard I.: George M’Clean, Caroline Streeter, Frank Kimber, Fred Head and Gertrude Swain. After the distribution. Mr Quayle intimated that tbe school would bo closed for three weoksfor the harvest holi* days, and the proceedings terminated -with, the singing of the National Anthem.
