CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. Stewards—Messrs A. Boyle, P. Cunningham, J. D. Lance, R. M. Morten, A. B. G. Rhodes, R. Heaton Rhodes, J. Studholma, T. Taschemafcer, Sir George Clifford, Bart., Hons E. W. Parker and L. Walker, M.L.C., Dr H. H. Prins; Hon Judge, Mr F. C. Tabarb; Hon Treasurer, Mr G. G. Stead; Starter, Mr J. Crasswell; Clerk of the Course, Mr Montague Lewin ; Clerk of the Scales, Mr Alfred Evans; Hendicapper, Mr J. E. Henry; Secretary, Mr W. H. E. Wnnklyn.

The summer race meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held at the Riccarton. racecourse yesterday. A drizzling rain fell in the forenoon, but a very pleasant afternoon followed. The attendance was miserably small, and though the racing' was vary good, the proceedings were quiet to dulaess, and speculation was restricted, only £2617 being passed through the totaliaatore, against £3237 at the corresponding meeting last year. His Excellency the Governor, the Countess of Glasgow and suite arrived before the racing began, and were received by the Hon B. W. Parker, chairman of the club, by whom the Government House party and the officers of the British and French warships now at Lyttelton wore afterwards entertained at luncheon. Mr O. H. Amyes —for so long caterer here—having retired, his place was capably filled by Mr C. Klmgenstein, Mr Amyos’s successor in the A 1 Hotel. The Engineers’ Band played on the lawn, and the other appointments wore as complete as usual, and the course was iu good order and conducive to fast time. *

Continued disappointments did not deter the owner of Busybody from again entrusting her with his confidence, and she started favourite for the Hornby Welter Handicap, the event with which the programme began. My Jack, however, was almost as well backed, and this sterling colt beat the filly rather easily at the finish. The withdrawal of Lady Lear and Golden Fleece left only seven in the Middle Park Plate. Woll’s Crag was made favourite, and Lakesbell, Neroli and Reflector were well blacked, and to these four the race was practically confined, the son of Lochiel showing some fulfilment of his early promise by winning a pretty race. For the Midsummer Handicap, Au Revolt was installed a strong favourite, as his recent performances warranted ; Johnny Faa, Reynard and Prime Warden were substantially supported, though neither of the two eons of Miss Kate was thought by his owner to have much prospect of winning. The race was run at a very slow pace, and after Au Ravoir had made his own running up to the last furlong, he was unable to stall off the challenge of Reynard, who won his maiden race by a neck from the favourite. Clanranald, by running third, performed much better than his backward condition led to be expected. Inez was evidently nob so well ae she was a week before. Addington won the Selling Race comfortably, bub the bandages on his forelegs deterred purchasers, aud ha returned to his owner without a bid. The start for the Craven Plate was spoilt by two of the horses swerving across as the word was given. My Jack being the worst sufferer, while Yogengang got off well, was never headed and won a good race. . The Interval Stakes saw Dunoon atone for many disappointments, but the Post Handicap added another to the many failures of Busybody, who was again made favourite, the race going to Persuasion, who showed a marked improvement on the form she exhibited earlier in the day. The handicap for the Inst event was framed by MrGresswellj all the entries accepted, all were backed, and a non-favourite won, a sequence which was decidedly complimentary to the handicapper. Mr Cresowell was also successful as starter for the meeting, keeping his fields well in hand aud despatching them* without delay and in good order, though he had some fractious animals to deal with; indeed, the number of kickers was a notable feature, but the only serious injury was to Au Eevoir, who received a nasty kick from Clanranald at the start for the Midsummer Handicap, and left the course lame. The following are details of the racing HOENBY WELTER HANDICAP, of 50 sots. One, mile and a quarter.
