THE DAISY INDUSTRY. SYDNEY, Dec. 13. Mr Valentine, the New Zealand dairy esoert, has been interviewed. Ha eaya that before the Colonies can do much good in the batter trade they mast distribute their produce more freely and export direct to Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol. He strongly favours State supervision and grading. There is, he saya, a good opening for cheese in England, but the article must be of the finest quality. HEAVY FINES. The Dubho Boiling Down Company has been fined a sum of JE16.870, in addition to those inflicted against the Manager and Secretary, for hilling without a license, making a total of .£50,610. A remission has been applied for. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS. MELBOURNE, Dec. 13. The Minister for Education, in reply to a deputation, promised to ask his colleagues to favourably consider an alteration of the law prohibiting religious instruction in State schools. THE “AGE” LIBEL ACTION. Mr Purves, Q.C., has commenced his address for the defence in the libel action, Speight versus the Age. A DEFICIENCY, Lempriere, Secretary of the Grand Lodge, explains in connection with the deficiency in the Masonic accounts, that ten years ago his assistant robbed him of the amount of the deficiencey in the benevolent fond. The matter, he says, was reported and, as he thought, arranged. It has been decided to ask Lempriere to resign, and there the matter will end. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TAXATION. ADELAIDE, Dec. 13. The Legislative Assembly has passed through all stages, a Bill doubling the Income tax for one year, as an emergency tax, rendered necessary by the rejection of the Taxation Bill. The Labour Party opposed the measure, urging Government to hold a special session after the Christmas holidays to repass the original Bill,
