ARBOR DAY.
To-morrow will be observed as Arbor’ Day, and, as was the case last year, tha bulk of the planting in this district will taka place at New Brighton. Some of the elder children belonging to the East Christchurch school, accompanied by their teachers, will proceed to New Brighton by the 10 a.m. tram, and will be joined on their arrival by children from the local and Marshland schools. Under the supervision of Mr M. Murphy, and assisted by some of the residents, they will plant trees on some of the streets and in tha County reserves. The children attending the Addington school will carry on operations in their school ground. The Sydenham Borough Council has proclaimed a holiday, and has invited the children from the local school to join in its planting of trees in the Recreation Reserve j the Works Committee has made arrangements for a supply of trees. The Linwood Council has also decided to celebrate the day in a fitting manner. At Sumner tree planting will be carried on by children attending tho local school. At Lincoln the public school will bo closed, and the children will take part with the Committee in beautifying the School grounds. At Geraldine the proceedings will be of an imposing character, commencing with a procession, headed by & brass band, to the Native bush. A belt of ornamental trees will be planted round the bush, and any trees that have been destroyed by fire will be replaced. At Lyttelton the usual weekly half-holiday will be kept on Friday, and trees will be planted on a spot selected by tha Borough Council. The Board of Education is providing the trees for any school applying for them, bub ae a number of the institutions under the Board's control are closed on account of the prevalence of measles, the offer has not been largely taken advantage of.
