LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING,

A special meeting of the Lyttelton Borough. Council was held on Monday evening, for the purpose of considering what steps should be taken to employ some of the surplus labour in Lyttelton, and of deciding in what manner Arbor Day should be celebrated; present—His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Stinson, Schumacher, Thompson, Webb, Owen, Chambers and Laurensou. Councillor Laurensou moved and Councillor Thompson seconded —“ That a sum not exceeding £IOO be allocated in the meantime for the purpose of absorbing the surplus labour in Lyttelton and that the Estates, Water Supply and Works Committees be asked to report by next Monday night as to what works are most in need of completion this season.”

After some discussion as to the works most needed the motion was carried. With regard to the celebration of Arbor Day, Councillor Schumacher moved, and Councillor Stinson seconded—" That the Council meet at the Council Chamber at 2 p.m. on Friday next, and proceed to the Sumnor road to plant trees on the land below the road,”

The motion was carried, and after the consideration of several matters of detail the meeting terminated.
