Archibald John M’Neill, aged twenty-one, pleaded “Guilty” to a charge of obtaining by means of false pretences one *air of trousers, value .£1 12s, from William Pengally, of Durham streol. Sergeant-Major Mason deposed that on Tuesday evening, July 25, accused went to prosecutor's shop and gave an order for a pair of trousers. He represented that he was a son of “ Dr M’Neill,” and resided next to Dr Thomas in Colombo street. William Peagelly gave corroborative evidence. He stated that he had made enquiries and found that no doctor named “M’Neill” resided in Colombo street. In answer to the Bench Sergeant-Major Mason stated that accused was a recent arrival in Christchurch, and nothing was known against him. The Bench remanded accused till Thursday to enable the Probation Officer’s report to be received.
