ASHBURTON POLO CLUB. The present irtha first season that polo hatbean played in the Ashburton district, bat the new sport has been entered into with |paat spirit, and haa already become exceedingly popular. As with older eatab- " lishe'd Clubs, it was thought only fitting that the season should close with a sports gathering, and this took place yesterday onthe Ashburton racecourse. The weather was far from being favourable, for the early pact el the afternoon was dull and bleak, and befdrh the’ programme had proceeded far rain set in, which, although not heavy, marred the, - enjoyment.'' The attendance, considering the day, was fairly large, between 300 and 400. persons being on the ground, and these witnessed a really capital afternoon’s sport. In place of a . hurdle race there was a jumping competition. Bight ponies ; took pairt, andmost of them showed proficiency. Th's!trophy was awarded to a clever enough little animal, which it would, however, be tool much to say was the beat jumper. The Bending Competition fell to Mr fi. A. 31. Buckley, with his tractable creamy. Nobby, after which the same owner’s Banjo’very easily won the Polo Cup. Beano, it may be remembered, was favourite for the similar event at the Christchurch pohLgathering, where, he ran third; but yesterday he appeared in very improved condition, and in point of fitaese nothing in the race could compare with him. The little chestnut, however, gave further proof of his worth by carrying 16st 91b, his owner in the ■addle, to victory in the Race. Mr E. Saunders easily disposed of his solitary opponent in the hitting competition, and the cigar and umbrella competition, which brought out a trio, was awarded Mr Denshire, Mr E. Curtis, who finilhed far ahead of the others, being disqualified for only having his umbrella partially open when he mounted. 'The tandem race proved the most interesting, item on the card. Mr Saunders had an exceedingly wall.trained pair, and his team were warm favourites. At the turning point he was rah into, and lost a lot of ground, but once clear ha set- sail down the straight and, caching the leading pair opposite the rajls, - won by a length. There was a considerable, amount of in the race for the Ladies’ Bracelet, which vnis secured by Mr Stewart for Mias Clati. 7 The bpatumes in the final event were really good, one of the most effective being‘worn by the rider of the winner. The following are details of’the sport HUBDLBCOMPBTITION, over two flights of w-’- - ‘hurdles. For trophy. ' ' Mr Hickman's bsr Tim Whiffler ; 1 Mr B. F. Curtis’ bli m Gert 2 Six others competed. ..
