IMPERIAL POLITICS.
ILLNESS OP GLADSTONE. THE ANTI-HOME RULE MOVEMENT. [Special to Press Association.] LONDON, March 13. Mr Gladstone is suffering from an attack of influenza, and some anxiety is felt as to his condition. Money is being abundantly subscribed to resist the granting of Home Rule, and the agitation is increasing. The proposal to hold a great antiHome Rule meeting in the Albert Hall, in April, has been abandoned. The proposal was mooted when it was expected that the gathering would be attended by 10,000 Ulster men ; but as only 700 could come, it was decided not to hold the meeting. Yielding to pressure from the Opposition, tho Government has postponed the second reading of the Home Rule Bill till after Easter. The Irish Landowners’ Convention refuses to accept tha Evicted Tenants’ Commission’s report, which it denounces as ruinous, ignoring the history and characters of the tenants and condoning, and helping tho promoters of, .the Plan of Campaign. Mr Hogan has given notice to ask if the Admiralty has received a report ou the working of the Kanaka system. March 14. The British artillery in Egypt is to be reinforced. The Radicals and Nationalists are much aggrieved at Mr Gladstone yielding to the Unionists by •postponing the second reading of the Home Rule Bill until after Easter. Mr Gladstone is bettor, but is still confined to his bed. A warm debate has taken place in the House of Commons on tho report of the Evicted Tenants Commission. Mr Balfour insisted that it was a mere waste of paper. Mr Morloy, Secretary for Ireland, replied that the Government intended to submit for the consideration of members proposals based on the Commissioners’ report.
