An enthusiastic meeting was held iu the Provincial Hall to-night, the Mayor ia the chair, with regard to the latest propoaala of the Midland Eailway Company. The following resolutions were carried amidst cheers:—"(l) That this meeting, while fully recognising the loyalty of the Government to Nelson during the last session of Parliament in its steadfast refusal to support the variation of the Midland railway contract ashed for by the Company, earnestly requests the Government to refuse its consent to any modifications of the contract which would leave the section from Belgrove to Eeefton out of the scheme; (2) That this meeting reminds the Canterbury branch of the Midland Sailway League of the loyal support accorded to it by the Nelson branch from the inception of the League, and asks its equally loyal support to defeat the attempt of the Midland Eailway Company to drop out of the contract the section of the railway Belgrove to Eeefton; (3) That this meeting pledges itself to resist to the utmost of itii power all attempts to modify the Midland railway contract to the exclusion of the section Belgrove to Eeefton, and that it will not cease to agitate till its right, specially pledged by the Government of Sir Julius Vogel and the Parliament of New Zealand, and secured to it by the Midland railway contract on paper of being connected via Eeefton with the Grand Trunk line of the Middle Island, ia conceded.” Other resolutions endorsed the action of the League.
