IMPERIAL POLITICS.
[Special to Press Association.] LONDON. Jan. 2. Lord Aberdare will preside over the Commission which has been set up to enquire into the system of poor relief. The Pall Mall Gazette confirms the statement that Viscount Gormanston, Governor of British Guiana, is to be transferred, and it is believed his nest appointment will be to the Governorship of Tasmania. It is also expected that Sir Ambrose Shea, Governor of the Bahamas, will be appointed to succeed Sir J. B. Thurston, Governor of Fiji. Mr Tim Healy, addressing a meeting at Newcastle, declared that the Irish people would refuse to accept in Home Rule a clause similar to that in Mr Gladstone’s Bill of 1886, providing for taxing Ireland in the proportion of one fifteenth of Great Britain. The Government is enquiring, in open Court, into the claims of Dr Kenny, M.P., for the release of political prisoners. The Dublin Council denounces the detective office outrage, and does not attach any political significance to it. Jan. 3. The Right Hon J. Morley, Chief Secretary for Ireland, intends to disarm the Irish constabulary, replacing their bayonets with batons. LISBON, Jan. 1. Parleying between Portugal and Great Britain, with regard to the frontier of Manicaland in Africa, has ceased, it being found impossible to come to anv settlement.
