MINING NEWS.

[from our own correspondent.] REEFTON, May 14

The following is the Stock Exchange report:—The partial cleaning up at the No. 2 Keep-ifc-Dark, Globe, United Alpine, Progress, Keep-it-Dark and Cumberland Mines gives a total of 16290z_ of amalgam from top plates only. During the week a return of 12oz odd of clean gold and 14oz of amalgam, which generally yields 50 per cent of gold, was received from the Alexander dredge, representing seventy-four hours' washing. A temporary suspension of operations jb being made until tho necessary alterations ar* complete, so as to allow _of wood fuel instead of coal being used. Nothing very new is reported this week. Mining operations certainly have a healthy and promising outlook, and the steady yield of gold being obtained from tho different operative mines should ere Ion" restore a hotter feeling. Prospecting, D bowever, and the development of many of the mines now at the earlier stages, are only, it is to be regretted, being carried on in a restricted manner, and for the greater part the capital being invested is limited almost whclly to the gold-producing lines. Not enterprise, but another very useful commodity is wanting. During the week there has been fair enquiry for tho more leading lines, and sales have been made at good prices. Big Rivers show a slight further, rise, also Cumberlands. In the latter mine good indications of the near approach to the block in the lower workings are reported. Gallants sold at low rates, and crushing next week is spoken of. Lyell Creeks are saleable at a low price, and No. 2 Keep-ic-Darka touched 5s 9d, and sales at that. This Company promises well for a very payable month's work. 'Sir Charles Russells, Sir Francis Drakes and 1 a number of others show no alteration in value or extent of .business. United Alpines are at the top price among the leading values, and the difficulty mot /with'in getting parcels to operate on, shows at once how firmly the favourite old line is held.
