THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

[Per Press Association.] EEEFTON. April 13. A deputation of influential citizens, headed by Mr Irving, the County Chairman, waited on Mr B. Beeves, M.H.E., with reference to the opposition to the Midland Railway Company obtaining an extension of time to complete the' contract. The deputation asked Mr Reeves to use his best influence to get the Company’s request granted, subject to the condition that the land should he thrown open for settlement; as wide-spread dissatisfaction at present exists, owing to the inability of intending settlers to acquire land. Also, that the work of making the railway should be vigorously prosecuted. Mr Reeves, in reply, stated that he looked upon the railway as a great national undertaking, and would endeavour to treat the Company in the most considerate manner possible, without infringing on the public interests. He hoped that full facilities for settlement would be given at an early date. He promised also to do his best to urge the necessity for completing the line at the earliest possible time. Personally he knew hundreds of instances where people who applied for land bad been unable to obtain a title, owing to the unsatisfactory relations existing between the Government and the Company. He would do his best to remove [.these disabilities.
