CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, Sept. 5. (Before J. p. Jameson and E. Jones, Esqs.) ■ Drunkenness. Drummond Withers was fined 10s, or in default forty-eight hpura’ imprisonment. A first offender was charged with being drunk while in charge of a horse and trap in Montreal street, on the previous day. He did not appear, and was fined 10s, and ordered to pay £1 Is doctor’s costs for patching up his broken head. Stealing a Carbine.— Joseph Ayers (fourteen) was charged on remand with stealing a carbine, valued at £2 10s, the property of Dr Anderson, from the premises of the Eev Charles Turrell, on Sept. 2.j He •was brought up for sentence. His mother begged hard for another chance for him, and said she had got him a ship to goa,wayin. The Bench, in consideration of, tlio' accused’s youth, discharged Him with' a severe caution. Sheep-Stealing. Ernest Curtis (19) was charged with stealing a sheep, valued at 14s 6d, the property of John Muir, from the Addington yards, on August 29. Accused pleaded “ Guilty,” and it. was stated that he had previously been convicted of a similar offence. The caretaker at the yards said that the sheep had escaped from a mob, and remained about the yards. Witness put it in a pen until he found the owner, and accused had probably lifted it out of the pan, and afterwards sold it for 4s. He begged for another Chance for the boy to redeem his character. The Bench could not let the accused off altogether, but would deal leniently with him by sending him to gaol for seven days.
