ROAD BOARDS.

" ELLESMERE. . The ordinary meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held in the district office, Leeston, on Tuesday; present—Mr G. C. Waby (Chairman), and Messrs M. Jones, R. Lochhead, W. Watson and F. J. Henley. A letter was read from the Selwyn County Council, covering copy of resolutions passed at a meeting, of suburban Road Boards. It was moved by Mr Jones and seconded by Mr Watson strongly protest against resolution No. 3, recommending the Council to procure rating power in order to rate rural road districts for the assistance o! main roads through suburban districts, this Board being of opinion that it would be manifestly unfair to tax outlying districts which in no way would receive any benefit commensurate with such proposed charge ” The motion was carried. Mr R. B. Coward, manager for Mr E. G. Rhodes, interviewed the Board with reference to the gprse growing on the road at the approach to the Selwyn ford, and further suggested some improvement which he considered could be made at the approach to the river. It was decided to instruct the overseer to inspect the locality and report at the next meeting. Mr Fincham asked for some assistance in opening up the creek leading through Schnell’s property to the lake. Mr Fincham was told that a small grant might be given to those interested, provided the work proved of benefit to the road, but no responsibility would be taken by the Board in the matter. Mr A. M‘Lachlan asked permission and a grant to put in an additional pipe through the Taumutu and Little Rakaia road near bis section. It was decided to give Mr M'Lachlan. permission to take the pipes through the road at his own expense. It was decided to have another supply of poisoned grain prepared for distribution to ratepayers next Leeston sale-day. The following new works were authorised :—Reforming portionsof Taumutu road,Killinchy and Dunsandel road, Lower Killincby road and Leeston and Soutbbcidge road; formation of tramway road from Moorhead’s comer to Smithson’s. The tender of Mr A. M'Oloy for forming Furze’s road was accepted at 5s 2d per chain. The pay-sheet, amounting to £lsl 17a lOd, was passed and the meeting closed.

HEATHGOTE. The ordinary meeting of the Heathcote Eoad Board was held on Thursday; present —Mr E. Curry (Chairman), and Messrs A. M. Ollivier, E. J. Palmer, E. Martindale and F. Turvey.—lt was decided to move the pipes in Ollivier's road, so that they would be in a line with Ball’s creek, thus permitting of the ditch on the east side being filled up.—Mr M'Causland interviewed the Board with regard to a footpath, and was informed that nothing would be done until the Committee appointed had reported on it. — Mr F. Sandford also interviewed the Board, and asked a number of questions with reference to matters concerning the district. With one exception, the questions were answered to Mr Sandford’s satisfaction.—The Clerk was instructed to write to the Drainage Board, complaining of the tops of willows that had been cut down being left on the roads and river banks.—Correspondence was read : From Mr F. Sandford, forwarding, a resolution passed at a meeting held at Heathcote Valley. Eeceived.—-From Mr W. Clifford, asking parmission to erect gates on a public road. The request was granted, provided the words “ public road ” were painted on the gate.—From Mr W. Keighley, objecting to the erection of a gate on a road. The Board decided to reply that-it could see no objection to the gate remaining, as the road was not'formod and was impassable.—From Mrs J. Tulvar, drawing attention to the state of the footpath on the east, aide of Ollivier’s road. Consideration of the letter was deferred to next Board day.—From the Selwyn County Council, enclosing copy of resolutions passed at a conference of Chairmen of Eoad Boards. The Clerk was instructed to reply that the Board approved of the resolutions.— Prom the Drainage Board, asking the Board to out the willows that obstructed the flow of the Heathcote between Eadley and Cemetery bridges. The matter was left in the hands of Mr Ollivier. A number of -letters asking for an extension of time in which to pay the rates were read and dealt with. It was resolved—“ That legal proceedings be taken against every tenth person on the rolls who has not paid his rates on Sept. 10 (no respect to be paid to persons), and the same to be done every fourteen days till the whole are paid.”— After passing accounts for J 3488 15s 6d the meeting closed’. I'OKTTICTOEIA. A meeting of the Port Victoria Eoad Board was held on Tuesday, Sept. 1 ; present —Messrs Hugh Manson, James Allan, T. S. Manson; W. D. Gebbie and Orton Bradley (Chairman), —A,letter was read from the Chief Surveyor, saying that the various roads over Munson’s Hill appeared on the public maps, and being there, rightly or wrongly, the Board would have to observe the formalities required by the Act, before they could be exchanged for better routes,—A letter was received from the Church Property Trustees, to the effect that they agreed to the closure of the road over Manson’s Hill, provided the Board gave them a read of a suitah’e grade from the church reserve to the present main road. The Chairman was instructed to write to the trustees, and say that Manson’s estate willing to give five acres at the cutting in lieu of the present five acres.—The Board was of opinion that the proposed alteration would be of benefit to all the parties concerned.— Accounts to tho amount of <£l4 were passed for payment.
