THE NORTHERN CARRIAGE WORKS.
Messrs Bryant and Voice, proprietors of the Northern Carriage Works, next to th«j Carlton Hotel, on the Papanui Eoacl,ar«, establishing quite a name for themselves in the trade, and their numerous made entirelyon the premises, have secured! for them an excellent reputation. Theyj are now supplying a number of elegant; polo and dog-carts to order, in; point of material, workmanship and finish,; compare very favourably with any of the. imported vehicles. One just completed for Mrs Oliver is an exceedingly natty vehicle.j The panels are of mottled kauri, the haraj of Australian red-wood, and the shafts of 1 Australian lance-wood. The last-named! are so fixed that they are suspended from’ a fulcrum in front, and are attached : to a whip-spring at the back. They are] fastened by steel clips, thus obviating the use of bolt-holes, which are always objec» i tionable, and the shafts can be removed; easily if required. As there is no bar ini front of the dash-board, the horse is much: nearer to his work, and the occupants of; tho cart cannot feel any vibration what-; ever. The trimmings are of buffalo hide,’ the points of the shafts being covered in' pigskin. A Lome dog-cart for Mr H. 1 Whyte, of Gust, is of more sober colour,: but the materials and workmanship are equally good. A Pagnell dog-cart, for Mr : J. J.Clelland, of Springston, and a polocart, for Mr A, Bennetts, of Middleton, are very nice specimens of their class, and reflect great credit on the builders. The firm has also finished a sulky weighing less than fifty pounds, with high wheels of hickory, and so constructed that the greatest strength is combined with tho least possible weight. The wheels are high, and are fitted with Collins’ collars.
