NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
[Pas Pbess Association..] WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. Major Sommerville and Lieutenant Foster, of the New Zealand Rifle Association, have inspected the sites offered in the Upper Hutt district for the permanent range of the Association. One at Silverstream, which can be had on most reasonable terms, was found to be suitable; but as the 200yds range crosses a swamp and the removal of some timber is necessary, it is estimated that it will cost £250 to put the range in order, exclusive of buildings. If the Government ia prepared to come to the assistance of the Association in defraying the cost, this site will be chosen; but in the event of its not being so. Major Sommerville is of opinion that the peripatetic meetings will have to be resorted to, in which case the next annual competition would probably be held in Auckland. A site at Miramar is to be inspected to-morrow.
