SYDENHAM. ; The quarterly meeting of the Sydenham Licensing Committee was held-yesterday at the Borough Council Chamber; present —The Rev. L. M. Isitt (Chairman) and Messrs G. J. Smith, W. White, sen.,, and E. Beattie., ; The police report on the licensed houses in the Borough was considered by the Committee individually. The Chairman asked if the Committee considered it satisfactory! Mr Smith thought that the report was only satisfactory so far as it went. He had heard numerous complaints of disturbances at the Waltham Arms. • ‘ Sergeant M'Grath said that he had.been away at Ashburton ; but the constablewho bad been in charge had yis jttedV the ’ neighbourhood. repeatedly and had found every* thing satisfactory. The Committee granted the transfer. LANCASTER PARK HOTEL. R. Hill, for whom Mr Lougheey" appeared, applied for a permanent transfer of the license ‘of this hotel from C. W. ; Goldsmith. The application was granted. ; WALTHAM ARMS HOTEL. , ’ A temporary transfer of the license of this hotel from J. Dicks to H. S. Drummond was granted. This concluded the business. CHRISTCHURCH NORTH-WEST. . The quarterly meeting of the. Licensing, Committee of the North-wqst Ward of the city was held at the Resident Magistrate** Court at noon yesterday; present—Mr F. J. Eimbell (Chairman), and Messrs E. Weetenra, J. Y. Ross and J. P. Jameson. The license of the Clarendon Hotel was transferred from Sophia Taylor to Robert Allen, the police reporting favourably as to the conduct of the hotel. The Chairman': stated that satisfactory reports had been given by the police of all thei hotels in-the district, with, the exception of the ,Junction Hotel, in connection with which a complaint had been made that the licensee was. not in a fit ( state to conduct the! business properly. Preliminary evidente was heard, and the case was adjourned until Sept. 18; Thomas Leap, the licensee of the Hotel, in the meantime to have notice to attend the meeting of the Committee to be held on that day. EYEETON. The quarterly meeting of the ’ EyretOß Licensing Committee was held yesterdays present—Mr Evans (Chairman), and Coup, Hiatt, Pashby and Hopkins.. The Chairman read a petition in reference to the Junction Hotel, signed by. eight residents at Ohoka. He said the matter had been referred to the. police. The police submitted a report upon the results of: informations laid against the licensee of ; the Junction Hotel foe breaches of the’ Act. Mr Coup proposed and Mr Hopkins' seconded—“. That this Committee strongly; condemns the action of the. licensee, byi which he has been convicted in the Resident Magistrate's Court, Kaiapoi, and his; license endorsed; and, pending the decision; of the Court of Appeal in the Sydenham; cases and the election of a Committee,fori the district in December next, this Com-; mittee will leave the matter to be dealt! with by its successors.” The motion was; carried, the. At the quarterly meeting of the Oamartt Licensing Committee to-day, the publicans of the town applied for an extension of the hour of closing to 11 p.m. The application' was refused. DUNEDIN, Sept. 4. At a meeting of the Licensing Committed an application was made for the transfer; of the license of the Shamrock and Thistle Hotel to H. M’Eldowney, late of Oarnarn. The police objected, on the ground that! when the transferee was in Oarnarn he did; not conduct his hotel properly or save.' trouble to the police,’and that hie license; bad been refused as the house 1 was not! required in the neighbourhood.
