CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, Sept. 4. (Before J. P. Jameson and E. Jones, Esqs.) Alleged Larceny.— Joseph Ayers (15) was charged with stealing a carbine valued at £2 10s, the property of Dr Anderson, from the promises of the Rev Charles Turrcll. Constable Duggan said he was on the east town belt at about 8.30 p.m. on Sept. 2, and heard the report of a gun. Saw accused and another lad, and on searching young Ayera he found a cartridge on him. Witness searched for the gun, which he found in a hedge close by. On enquiring at Mr Turrell’s next day, ho found that the boy was employed there, and had taken the carbine from the house. The Rev Charles Turrell gave the boy a good character. He had not missed .the carbine until the constable came and told him about it. There was a little ammunition with it, but not much. Accused had been four weeks and a half in witness’ employ. Constable Gill said the boy was one of a band of larrikins on the Perry road, and bore an otherwise infelicitous reputation. Accused said he did not take the gun to steal it, but merely to get a price put on it, and see if it was worth buying. Mr Turrell could not take the boy back into his employ as he had already engaged another. Accused was remanded until the following day, to enable the police to communicate with his father. Alleged Assault. —Susanna Malcolm was charged with assaulting William Parkes at Linwood, on Sept. 3. Dr Ovenden said that a man, who gave the name of William Parkes, came to his surgery on the previous evening. Ho had been severely mauled about the head, on which were six wounds. Two of these were to the bones, and were such as might have been caused by a stone. He was not yet out of danger, as erysipelas might set in, Parkes having been drinking rather heavily. William Parkes said he had a disagreement with the woman in Hereford street on the previous evening, but he did not wish to go on any further with the case. Inspector Pender intimated that he would go on with the case. Witness continued to the effect that he was coming home about five o’clock, and when he wae at about Malcolm’s gate accused assaulted him with a stone in either hand, and " faced ” him. To the accused witness said ho gave her no provocation on the previous evening, but he had accused her of taking £l3 which he had in his parse. Accused then made a statement reflecting upon Parkes’ character. Inspector Pender asked for a remand to enable the police to bring further evidence. The Bench asked accused if she could get bail, and she replied, ‘'Yes, your Worship, but he’s (Parkes) been in delirium ‘ trimmings ’ for the last ten days.” Bail was fixed in .£lO, and accused remanded until Monday, Sept. 7.

LYTTELTON. Friday, Sept. 4. (Before T. M'Clatchie, Esq.) False Pretences. Thomas Hassal, charged with obtaining the sum of £G_ by means of false pretences, from William Pasey, of Dunedin, was, on the application of the police, remanded to Dunedin. OXFORD. Friday, Sept. 4. (Before John Ingram, Esq.) Embezzlement. Frederick Davies, charged with embezzling moneys belonging to the East Oxford School Committee, was remanded for eight days: Bail was fixed at £IOO, and two sureties of <£loo each. LEESTON. Friday, Sept. 4. (Before E. Begtham, Esq., E.M., W. D. Lawrence, W. Holley, P. Overton, and A. Todd, Eaqs., and Dr Gosset). Assault! —Matthew Keane was committed for trial on a charge of indecent assault. Civil Cases.— C. Frankish v. Yefnall, claim £3 16s Id; judgment for plaintiff by default.—Same v. M. Mitchell, claim £7 2a. The defendant pleaded bankruptcy, and plaintiff elected to withdraw the case.— Same v. G. Bright, claim £5 6s sd; judgment for plaintiff by default. —J. H. Doyle (as trustee for the late Mrs B. Doyle) v. J. Hall, claim £7 12s Sd. The debt was alleged to have been incurred by the defendant’s father, since deceased, and the case was dismissed, as the evidence did not show that the defendant was the legal executor. James Maxwell v. P. G. Craddock, claim £4 12s 6d; judgment for plaintiff by default.—M. Sharpe v. Kingan, claim £8 Is 6d. This case was adjourned by consent to next Court day.
