Finding the jury could not agree in the Coleman Phillips case after they had been sent back for some time, the Chief Justice ordered them to be discharged in preference to locking them up all night. It ia not known whether the Crown will abandon the urosecution. OAMARU, July 13. Eichard Butt, the solicitor who was arrested oa Saturday on a charge of embezzlement, was brought before the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day and remanded for a week. DUNEDIN, July 13. At a meeting of the Prohibition League ifc was decided to support a petition in opposition to the various Bills sought to be brought before Parliament antagonistic to the principle contained in Mr Joyce’s Bill, and to extend the franchise in licensing matters to persons of either sex over fche”age of twenty-one who have resided in the licensing district for six months. At a meeting of the Orange institution, a resolution was passed, “ That the Private Schools Bill introduced by Mr G. Hutchison is destructive of the bast principles of fcho present education system, aid contrary to the wishes of a majority of the electors of the Colony, and that steps should be taken to prevent its becoming law.”

The Commission of Inquiry into the administration of fcho bankrupt estate of James Macdonald resumed this morning. Dr Batchelor testified that Macdonald was still physically unable to stand tha strain of the inquiry! Mr Beetham said he would report accordingly* which practically means that the Commission has come to an end.
