The Hawera Acclimatisation Society has issued a circular to similar Societies throughout the Colony, inviting their co-operation’ in providing funds for the introduction o£ other kinds of feathered game than those already here. The suggestion appears to be a timely one, and we regret that the Canterbury Society has not seen its way to offer assistance. It is true that past efforts at acclimatisation have not been altogether successful from an economic' point of view, but this fact affords no tangible reason for entirely stopping the work. The Hawera Society suggests other' kinds of pheasants, English partridge and wild duck, plover and snipe, as suitable birds for importation, and there can be little doubt that in time these would make welcome additions to the game now available in the Colony. It has been proposed that the different Societies should contribute to -a common fund, that one Society should make the necessary purchases, and that on arrival the birds should be distributed throughout the Colony. No large sum of money would be required, but by adopting this plan and making one large importation, instead of several small ones, better results would certainly be obtained.' We observe the Wellington Societybas determined to set about the importation of further game suitable to the Colony, either with or without the co-operation of other Societies, We trust, however, that though the Canterbury Society has, for financial reasons, decided to refrain from taking part in the venture at present, it may see its way later on to reconsider its decision.
