AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
A CLERICAL ERROR, [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Mat 1. - A singular error lias been discovered in <tiie city valuation roll. It appears that in 1885 the Auckland Gas Company bad their valuation fixed at .£3600, and when the roll was made up in 1836 the amount appeared on the rate-book at illsoo. The Gas Company have consequently had the benefit of this for about four years past, and the city has thus lost .£BOO, The error was a clerical one, the valuer writing .£l5O instead of £3OO, the amount of the reduced value of the property, and this has only now been discovered. A special meeting of the City Council is to be held to consider the subject. The City Council decided to make redactions to 41500 in the annual expenditure upon the Free Library, the sum eo saved to be expended upon the purchase of books. The items of reduc.tioa include the librarian's salary, which now stands at illOO, with house and allowances, whilst the services of two assistants (of three at present employed) are to be dispensed with. The Conncil have finally declined the application of Pagger and Parker, for permission to use the surplus water at Edgecumbe’a Creek, one of the sources of the city water supply, for fellmongery purposes.
