I Ai'iiit, 30. I Hermit, the well-known thoroughbred f stallion, is dead. [Heaume, the winner of the Hastings I Plate, was recognised as one of the best two-year-olds in England last season. He made his dibut in the Bedford Plate at the Newmarket Second Spring Meeting, when he beat Bel Demouio, Llewellyn, and twelve others. His next appearance was in the Great Surrey Breeders' Foal Stakes at Epsom, in which he carried a penalty, and won comfortably from Marchesi, Hayraddia, and five others. Ho was beaten a length by Surefoot in the New Stakes at Ascot, but finished in front of Hidden Treasure, Far Niente, and six others ; and at the Newmarket duly Meeting won the j Chesterfield Stakes from Loup, Eiviera, and two others. At the Leicester Summer Meeting ho was second to Eiviera, beaten only a neck in the rich Portland Stakes, the speedy Semolina failing to get a place, and he wound up his two-year-old career I by winning the Challenge Stakes at the Newmarket October Meeting. His total winnings for the year amounted to £2393, Hacker, who finished second, started four times last season, his only victory being in the Maiden Stakes at Croydon, a race worth J6127.J
