RIFLE SHOOTING.

The E Battery of Artillery continued the competitions for the Gold Star and Cup at the Bromley range on Saturday afternoon. Corporal Treleaven being top scorer for the former with 75 points. Gunner Pavitt scoring a win for the Cup with 76 points (25 handicap) . SYDENHAM RIFLE CLUB v, IRISH RIFLES. A friendly match between teams representing the above took place on Saturday last, at the Sydenham Club’s range, and ended in a win tor the Club by 70 points. The weather was nob at all good for shooting,! the wind being very baffling, and the light at some of the ranges not so good as it mighthavebeen. The highest individual score on the range was made by Mr E. Jones, who managed to tot up the total of 69 points. Tne Club was three men short of the required number, owing to other attractions. The difficulty was, however, got over by giving an average for the three men, although it was at one time mooted that the match should only consist of eight men a side. The following are tiae scores:— Sydenham Club—Messrs E. Jones 69, J. Haigh 61, P. Parker 58, R. Eastwood, 56, W. Skelton 54, R. Hamilton 52, E. Just 51, average for three men absent 171; total 572. Irish Rifles Private Harry 68, Sergeant Butler 64, Mr Blake 62, ColourSergeant M‘Adams 60, Sergeant Miller 49, Lieutenant-Sergeant. Dobbs 43, Private Harvey 41, Private' Coulter 41, Private Pratt 37, Private Clarkson 37; total 502. On Saturday next it is intended to start a champion competition in connection with, the Club, the competition to last over three weeks. The final competition for the Captain’s trophy will ba held on Saturday next, and as the running is very close at present, the finish should be very interesting. WORKING MEN’S CLUB v. ENGINEERS. A friendly shooting match took place on Saturday evening between teams of the above in the hall of the W.M.C., with the Snider rifle, Morris tube attachment. The teams mustered fifteen men a side, seven shots each. Lieutenant M‘Gee captained the Engineers, and Mr W. Scull the Rifle Class. Much interest waa taken in the match by a number of onlookers. Very iair scoring was obtained, the result placing the Rifle Class the winners by 62 points. The scoring was as follows : W.M.C. Rifle Class.—J. Stonebridge 31, D. Leslie 31, H. Lightband 30, O. W. Canterbury Engineers. Sergeant LeCren 25, Sapper Ellison 23, Corporal Murdon 23, Sapper Lawrence 23, Lieutenant M‘Gee 23, Sergeant Lawrence 22, Sergeant Morris 22, Corporal Dennis 21, Sapper Nathan 21, Lance - Corporal Leo 21, Quartermaster-Sergeant *Kay 20, Sergeant Baker 20, Lance-Corporal Marriott 19, Corporal Paul 18, Sapper Price 14, total, 315.

On the result of the match being announced by Mr Scull, the Rifle Class gave three cheers for the visiting team, the Engineers responding in a like manner. Harmony was then indulged in, and some capital items were given. During an interval the President of the Club (Mr Garrard) expressed the pleasure the Club and Rifle Class had in tbe different corps accepting the invitation of the class to compete in friendly shooting matches. Lieutenant M'Gee conveyed the thanks of the Canterbury Engineers for the reception accorded them, and said that rifle shooting should be strongly supported by all volunteers. They had met with a hearty reception, and though beaten, he hoped that on the next occasion the Company would reverse the result of that night’s match.
